There’s a reason comedies are getting less funny, and it’s not what you might think

If you’ve been finding that American comedies have been getting less funny, you’re not alone. You might not even be sure why they’re not as good, even if there are plenty of killer jokes. The reason – according to Tony Zhou – is that most filmmakers aren’t taking advantage of the full spectrum of the medium. More specifically, they don’t take advantage of visual comedy, and instead they only use sound to make you laugh.

In this installment of Every Frame a Painting, Zhou takes a look at filmmaker Edgar Wright and examines how his movies do visual comedy so much better than most directors today.
